Maria Mojo Mondays: You Spoke Kindly. They Took It Personally.
Protecting their comfort at the expense of your truth? Yeah, we’re done with that.
Hey beautiful soul & mindset maverick,
We’re going deep today.
Because truth shouldn’t come with guilt - and your voice matters more than their comfort.
💬 Mojo Message of the Week:
“Speak your truth with kindness.
If someone takes it personally, that’s their work — not yours.”
This quote hit home for me years ago — but lately, it's been landing even deeper.
Because even when you speak with love...
Even when your voice is calm and your intentions are pure...
Some people still hear judgment. Or criticism. Or betrayal. Or they just take it personally.
But here’s what I’ve learned:
How they receive it says more about their internal landscape than your delivery.
Let me take you behind the curtain...
🌀 Mojo Truth-Telling Moments (Even When It’s Not Easy)
🟦 A financial foresight conversation with my parents...
When my parents moved across the country to be closer, I helped them because I could see how much they were struggling — physically, emotionally, and financially.
Shortly after they settled in, I sat down with them for an honest, heart-centered talk.
I urged them — lovingly — to be mindful with the money from the sale of their New York home.
Because I knew if my mom passed first, my dad wouldn’t receive her pension and he had no pension (he would just be living on Social Security Income - which wasn’t much).
It wasn’t criticism. It wasn’t condescending.
It was me trying to protect them.
But my dad — the deeply feeling, loyal, BLUE-hearted soul that he was — took it as a slight.
Like I was calling him poor.
He wasn’t hearing my intention. He was hearing his own fear.
And I get it now… that wasn’t mine to fix.
🟦 A caregiving moment that hit a nerve...
Later, when I was caring for my dad full-time, I started losing corporate clients.
Not because I dropped the ball — but because every doctor appointment ran over, and those clients didn’t like being rescheduled.
One day I shared that fact with my dad — gently, honestly — just trying to navigate the impossible.
He took it personally. Like I was blaming him.
I wasn’t.
I was breaking under the weight of doing it all, and still trying to show up fully — for him and for my business.
That, too, wasn’t mine to carry.
🟦 A recent friendship that quietly unraveled...
I recently had a conversation with someone I care about — someone who had been avoiding a real discussion.
I finally spoke up — with love, clarity, and respect.
But instead of leaning in, they pulled away.
No discussion. No openness. Just silence.
And wow... that kind of ghosting hurts when you know your heart was pure.
But here’s the deal:
I can’t stop telling the truth just because someone isn’t ready to hear it.
And neither can you.
💡 Mojo Coaching Takeaways: When Truth Gets Twisted
If you’ve ever spoken your truth with kindness and still been misunderstood — you are not alone.
Here’s what I want you to remember:
1️⃣ Kindness ≠ Comfort.
Some people only hear what they’re ready to hear.
Even the softest delivery can sound sharp to a sensitive ego.
2️⃣ Projection is powerful — but not personal.
Their reaction isn’t always about you.
It’s about the story they’ve been rehearsing in their own head.
3️⃣ Real love holds truth.
Truth without kindness is cruelty.
But kindness without truth? That’s not love. That’s appeasement.
4️⃣ You can be both kind and direct.
You’re not responsible for managing someone else’s discomfort with honesty.
That’s their work.
🧭 Mojo Reframe:
Next time someone takes your truth personally, instead of spiraling into guilt, try asking:
“Did I speak from love? Was I grounded in kindness?”
If the answer is yes — you did your job.
Their discomfort might actually be the growing pain they need.
Let it be.
💥 Your Final Maria Mojo Boost:
You weren’t born to walk on eggshells.
You were born to walk in truth — with compassion, courage, and clarity.
Speak your truth.
Say the thing.
And if someone pulls away because of it?
They were never really leaning in to begin with.
You’ve got this. 💛
And the right people? They won’t flinch when you’re real.
