Maria Mojo Mondays: You Can’t Always Control What Happens...
But You Can Control Who You Are Through It!
Hey Mindset Maverick,
Let me tell you what happened last week.
I developed a rash.
Not just any rash — but one that landed me at Urgent Care, swelling around one eye and all.
At first, I thought it was an allergic reaction to the intense pollen (the count was over 900 the day I took my usual walk!). It was super windy, and I didn’t realize until after that the air quality was off-the-charts bad. The next morning, I noticed a strange rash starting on my forehead — circular, with tiny little bubbles — and later, similar blisters showed up on my eyelid. 😳
But when the doctor looked me in the eye — literally — and said:
“I think this might be shingles… and you need to see an eye doctor ASAP because it can cause blindness if it spreads to the eye,”
…my brain froze for a second.
Now, here's the thing…
As a YELLOW in the Color Code, I’m naturally optimistic and lighthearted.
And truthfully? Even when life throws something big at me — like when I was diagnosed with MS over 20 years ago — I don’t spiral.
Sure, I might have a hot-minute internal freakout (who wouldn’t?)
But then my bounce-back brain kicks in.
I don’t let the fear take the wheel.
Let’s go back to that moment in Urgent Care when the doctor said she thought it was shingles …
I had a very real human moment.
My face was blank — but my brain? It was racing.
“Nope. That can’t be right.”
“This is just a high-pollen reaction. That’s all.”
“There’s no way it’s that serious.”
And then the mindset switch flipped.
🧠 I realized: I get to choose what I focus on.
I can let fear spiral… or I can interrupt it.
So I did what any resilient badass would do:
I pulled that scary seed of fear out of my mind like a weed.
I refused to let it take root and grow.
Instead of imagining the worst —
I chose to ground myself in the present and expect the best.
This wasn’t denial.
This was disciplined optimism.
This was mental leadership.
We don’t always get to choose what shows up in our life…
But we do get to choose the story we tell about it.
And that story?
It becomes the energy we live in.
🔥 Mojo Mindset Moves When Life Throws Curveballs:
1️⃣ Feel your feelings — but don’t become them.
You’re allowed to process, pause, and breathe. Just don’t pitch a tent in panic.
2️⃣ Catch the story early.
Fear plants seeds. Decide what kind of garden you want to grow.
3️⃣ Ground yourself in the now.
In this moment — are you okay? Good. Stay here.
Let your nervous system catch up before running ahead.
4️⃣ Expect the best with your whole heart.
Even if things are uncertain — what if this all works out better than you imagined?
🗣️ Final Mojo Boost
Your power isn’t in pretending bad things don’t happen.
Your power is in choosing your response — with courage, clarity, and calm.
So the next time life throws something unexpected at you?
🧡 Take the breath.
💥 Flip the story.
🌈 Pull the fear seed out by the root.
👑 And move forward like the resilient rockstar you are.
You’ve got this.
And yes — I’m writing this with one eye semi-closed, rocking it like the badass I am. 😎
Because mindset work? It’s not just what I teach — it’s what I live.
With love, light, and a little calamine lotion,
