Maria Mojo Mondays: The Self-Talk Detox

How to Rewrite the Narrative in Your Head

Hey Mindset Maverick,

Let’s talk about that voice in your head.

Ever walked into a store, heard a random song, and later caught yourself singing it without even realizing?

Or better yet, someone close to you starts humming a tune in the morning, and before you know it, you’re humming it too?

Yeah… our minds soak things up - whether we want them to or not.

And that’s exactly how those sneaky, negative thoughts get in too.

And that brings us back to the voice in your head. You know the one.

The one that says:

  • “I’m not good enough.”

  • “I’m behind. Everyone else has it figured out.”

  • “Who do I think I am to go after that?”
(You are a badass who deserves to have what you want! Ok, I digressed)

  • “I’m a failure because I haven’t ‘made it’ yet!”

If someone else spoke to you like that, you’d drop them like a bad habit.
So why do we let that voice run wild in our own heads?

This week, we’re doing a Self-Talk Detox.
Because your brain is listening, and your words shape your reality.

Just like that song you heard in that store, your brain hears what you are telling yourself and makes it feel real to you.

Step 1: Identify the Lies

Your inner critic is full of sh*t.

That voice isn’t YOU - it’s just outdated programming, fear, and recycled conditioning you never signed up for.

Pay attention to the thoughts that come up when you’re stressed, uncertain, or stepping outside your comfort zone.

🔹 What’s the loudest negative thought you tell yourself?
🔹 Whose voice does it sound like? (A parent, teacher, old boss, society norms?)
🔹 Would you say it to your best friend?

Spoiler: That voice isn’t telling the truth. It’s just repeating a bad script.

Step 2: Flip the Script

Instead of trying to silence the inner critic (it’s stubborn), replace it with something more powerful.

Old script: “I’m not good enough.”
✅ New script: “I’m capable, and I will figure things out as I go.”

Old script: “I always mess things up.”
✅ New script: “I learn fast, and every misstep makes me stronger.”

Old script: “I can’t handle this.”
✅ New script: “I’ve handled hard things before, and I always come out stronger.”

Old script: “I’m a failure.”
✅ New script: "Failure is just a story. The truth? Every setback is a lesson, and I’m always leveling up."

Old script: “I’m fat and out of shape.”
✅ New script: "I am in the process of focusing on improving my overall health & fitness level.”

That last one is a trick that works beautifully with many of my clients since they can’t just turn around that script to the opposite and say “I’m thin” because their Bull Sh*t Meter would rise up quickly!

So, using the “I’m in the process of” is a powerful way to flip the switch on something negative you are affirming!

Your words become your beliefs. Your beliefs become your reality. Choose wisely.

Step 3: Lock It In with Action

Your brain believes what you prove to it. So here’s your challenge this week:

1) Catch yourself in a negative thought spiral. Write it down.
2) Flip the script. Rewrite it with a more empowering thought.
3) Take one tiny action that supports your new belief. (Example: If your old thought was “I’m not good at speaking up in meetings,” your action might be to ask one question in the next meeting.)

Small shifts lead to massive results.

Final Mojo Boost

You are not your thoughts. You are the badass who decides which ones get to stay.

So choose the ones that light you up. Choose the ones that move you forward. Choose the ones that remind you who the hell you really are.

This week, talk to yourself like the powerhouse you are.
